THE BEGINNINGS OF LASER TECHNOLOGY

THE BEGINNINGS OF LASER TECHNOLOGY Today, lasers are everywhere, from medical procedures, to supermarket checkouts and heavy industrial processes, but in 1960 , the first working laser was described as “a solution looking for a problem.” With creative thinking, the ability to produce an intense, narrow beam of light from a single orientation was found to be very useful .   Several types of lasers were invented in a short period of time. Optical fibre lasers were first demonstrated in 1961 by Elias Snitzer. The gas laser cutting process , using a carbon dioxide mix, was first invented in 1964 at Bell Labs, by Kumar Patel. The crystal laser process for cutting was developed, also founded at Bell Labs in 1964 , by a different engineer named J. E. Geusic .   DISCOVERING GAS LASER CUTTING The history of laser cutting starts in 1965 , when Western Electric introduced the first production laser, using a laser to drill holes in diamond dies .   The first experiments in gas...

history of plasma cutting

History of Plasma Cutting What is plasma cutting? It is a process that uses a plasma torch to cut through steel and other kinds of metal or materials of various thicknesses. An inert gas (in a few units, compressed air is used instead of a gas) comes out of a nozzle at high speed while an electrical arc forms through the gas to the surface that is to be cut. The arc turns some of the gas into plasma, which is hot enough to melt the metal that is to be cut and is also fast enough to blow the molten metal away from the cut as it is produced . Plasma cutting is a process that cuts through electrically conductive materials by means of an accelerated jet of hot plasma. Typical materials cut with a plasma torch include steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass and copper, although other conductive metals may be cut as well. Plasma cutting is often used in fabrication shops, automotive repair and restoration, industrial construction, and salvage and scrapping operations. Due to the high speed...

history of tig welding

Gas tungsten arc welding , also known as tungsten inert gas  welding, is an arc welding process that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld. The weld area and electrode are protected from oxidation or other atmospheric contamination by an inert shielding gas (argon or helium). A filler metal is normally used, though some welds, known as autogenous welds, or fusion welds do not require it. When helium is used, this is known as heliarc welding . A constant-current welding power supply produces electrical energy, which is conducted across the arc through a column of highly ionized gas and metal vapors known as a plasma. GTAW is most commonly used to weld thin sections of stainless steel and non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, magnesium, and copper alloys. The process grants the operator greater control over the weld than competing processes such as shielded metal arc welding and gas metal arc welding, allowing for stronger, higher quality welds. However, GTAW...
history of  mig welding  MIG welder is a must at most welding shops. It is one of the most famous methods today as it also can be controlled by robots. It is simple enough that it also can be operated at home by the enthusiast. You only need a few tools and you already can make amazing welds with a little bit of practice. However, the  MIG welding evolution  itself started over sixty years ago. That is when people first started learning the use of consumable wire electrodes in producing an electric arc, to melt and  join separate pieces of metals together. Gas metal arc welding  ( GMAW ), sometimes referred to by its subtypes  metal inert gas  ( MIG ) and  metal active gas  ( MAG ) is a  welding  process in which an  electric arc  forms between a consumable MIG  wire   electrode  and the workpiece metal(s), which heats the workpiece metal(s), causing them to fuse    (melt and join). Al...
